DEBATE - ACADEMIC ACCOMPLISHMENT IS THE SOLE AIM OF THE STUDENT - AGAINST THE MOTION

Academic accomplishment is the sole aim of the student- Debate speech against the motion

    “No one should negotiate their dreams. Dreams must be free to fly high. No government, no legislature, no educational system has a right to limit your dreams. You should never agree to surrender your dreams.” 

    Honorable chairperson, distinguished adjudicators, fellow debaters and all my dear friends … Good morning! I strongly oppose the motion academic accomplishment is the sole aim of the student.

    Albert Einstein once said everybody is a genius but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will lead its all life believing that it a stupid. Do you realize how many kids relate to that fish?  Swimming upstream in class never finding their gifts. Thinking they are stupid, believing they are useless but the time has no more excuses. I accuse the undue importance given to the academic accomplishments that kills the creativity individuality and being intellectually abusive. In every field there are lots of change in our life for instances a phone, a car form hundred years ago entirely different from its new version. But there is no change in our attitude towards the importance of academic accomplishment. Aren’t we shameful? In literally more than a century nothing has changed. Yet you claim to prepare students for the future? But with evidence I must ask do you prepare the students for the future or the past. I did a background check on you and the record show that you train pupil work in factory which explains why you put students in straight rows tell them sit still raise your hands if you want to speak, give them a short break to eat and eight hours a day tell them what to think and make them compete to achieve academic excellence. Back then times were different, we all have a past, I myself I’m not a Gandhi but today we don’t need to make robots Zombies. The world has progressed and now we need people who think creatively, critically and  independently with the ability to connect. Every scientist will tell you that no two brains are the same and every parent with two or more children will confirm that claim. So please explain why you treat students like cookie cutter frames or snap back hat. Still you claim that academic accomplishment is the sole aim of the students. If a doctor prescribes the exact same medicine to all of his patience the result will be tragic. When it comes to our academic filed this is exactly what happens.

        My dear friends if we are continuing down this road the result will be lethal and I don’t have much faith in academic excellence but I do have faith in people. And if we can customize health care, cars and Facebook pages. It’s our duty to do the same in our academic field to upgrade it change it . Sure Maths and Science are important but no more than art or dance. Let’s give every gift an equal chance. Students may be 30 percentage of our population but they are hundred percentage of our future .So let’s attend to their dreams and there is no telling what we can achieve. This is a world which I believe a world were fish are no longer forced to climb trees.
